Our Research Objectives

Our research objectives are the following:

  • To study the nature and characteristics of the cosmic rays of highest energies on the basis of the experimental data and novel theoretical developments.
  • To measure the primary flux of cosmic rays using the Yakutsk array detectors. To study the energy spectrum with different components of the shower measured at very high energies.
  • To study and to develop new experimental techniques to be used in coming cosmic ray experiments, in particular detectors for extreme-energy cosmic ray observation from space and detectors for observation of the high energy muon production heights.

  • To develop new tools for analysis of extensive air showers, to study both systematic errors and fluctuations in the determination of energies, arrival directions, and nature of the primary particles. To analyze individual highest energy events with the help of the tools developed.
  • By making use of the dataset collected, to test the conjectures of the global anisotropy in arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays, correlations with the large scale structure of the Universe and patterns of geomagnetic field in the distribution of the arrival directions, separately for sub-GZK and super-GZK energies.
  • To identify possible astrophysical sources of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays by positional correlations and to investigate physical mechanisms which result in particle acceleration.
  • To elucidate the nature of primary particles from the distribution of arrival directions and from reanalisis of individual events at highest energies. To carry out studies of possible manifestations of new physics and astrophysics in ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.
  • To evaluate the shower parameters with model simulations on the basis of the measured EAS components. To study chemical composition of UHECRs by analysing distribution of shower maxima in atmosphere, muon production heights and muon-to-electron ratio, and other relevant parameters of the shower.
